What AS9100D adds to ISO 9001, and why primes filter on it

A supplier holding ISO 9001:2015 has a quality management system. A supplier holding AS9100D has that same system plus the aerospace sector's additions to it. For most primes and Tier-1s the second is a gate, not a preference — it appears in the approved-supplier criteria, and a quote from a supplier without it often does not get read.
The structure
AS9100D is built directly on ISO 9001:2015 and adds approximately 100 aerospace-specific requirements on top of the base standard. It is published under the IAQG 9100 family, with SAE as the Americas publisher. The lineage runs back to the requirements of aerospace regulators and primes, which is why the additions read as risk-control clauses rather than process documentation.
What Rev D introduced
Two additions in Revision D matter most to a buyer approving a machining supplier:
Product safety. The standard requires the organisation to plan and manage the processes needed to assure product safety through the product lifecycle — hazard identification, risk management, and communication of safety-critical items down the chain.
Counterfeit parts prevention. Rev D added an explicit requirement to prevent counterfeit or suspect counterfeit parts entering the product. For a machining supplier this reaches into raw material traceability: where the bar stock came from, what certification travels with it, and whether that certification can be produced against a finished part months later.
Rev D also merged the standard's risk clause with ISO 9001's risk-based thinking requirements rather than running them in parallel.
What it does not tell you
Certification says a system exists and has been audited. It does not tell you:
- What tolerances the shop actually holds on your material and geometry
- Whether the measuring equipment can verify your features (see reading a CMM specification)
- Whether capacity exists on the machines your part needs
- What the certificate number is, and whether it is currently valid
The last one is worth stating plainly: ask for the certificate number and its validity dates, and check them. A capability page that claims a standard without a number is asking to be taken on trust.
